How it works: The secret to successfully putting anger in it’s place

I commonly hear someone say, “I need help with anger management.” But trying to control your anger is a gross misunderstanding of how emotional regulation works in the brain.

Your body has only two core physiological modes that it swings between: It’s either in a state of arousal (narrowing focus and increasing feelings of stress) or relaxation (widening focus, decreasing feelings of stress).

If you get taken over by anger, it’s not because you lost control. That’s how it looks on the outside. But on the inside your body and mind is feverishly trying to take control, like a firefighter trying desperately trying to quell an inferno. Your heart-rate and blood-pressure spike, and so-called “fight” hormones are dumped into your bloodstream.

Therefore, the coaching work we can do together will show you how to find and easily turn on your body’s natural relaxation reflex. It has to be a reflex and not a task you consciously think about, much like the muscle memory of your golf swing or unblinking rhythm of a guitarist.
