How we work
Most practices list the conditions they treat. The more useful question is how the work is actually done, because the method matters more than the label on your difficulty.
Internal Family Systems
IFS treats your reactions not as symptoms to remove but as parts of you that once made sense and are still trying to help. The work is learning to hear them without being run by them. It underpins how we think about anxiety, trauma and stuck relationship patterns. Read more about IFS.
EMDR and trauma work
Trauma needs a method built for it. Alongside IFS we use EMDR, which works on how a memory is stored rather than asking you to talk through it repeatedly. It suits people who find that understanding what happened has not changed how it feels alone. More on trauma and PTSD.
Mindfulness-based therapy
Our usual starting point for anxiety is mindfulness-based psychotherapy rather than medication. The aim is deliberate access to your parasympathetic nervous system, the brake on your body’s stress response. Reaching it on purpose is a learnable skill that often changes how manageable anxiety feels early on.
Relationship therapy
Our DC clinicians draw on Imago Relationship Therapy, Relationship Enhancement and Emotionally Focused approaches. Because couples work is a large part of what we do here, it has its own page — see marriage and couples counseling in Washington DC.
Who we help
Anxiety and stress
Panic, phobias, and worry that has started to shrink your life. This is one of the most common reasons people contact us.
Depression
Depression is often treated with medication alone, without much attention to what is driving it. Combining medication with talk therapy generally works better than either on its own.
Trauma and PTSD
We use IFS and EMDR for trauma that has not shifted with talking therapy alone, including single-incident trauma and longer histories.
Anger
Anger is not confined to people whose temper gets them into obvious trouble. It shows up quietly too, as resentment finding passive routes out inside a relationship.
Addiction
Whether the concern is alcohol, drugs, food or sex, the pattern runs through emotion rather than around it. Understanding how emotions feed the cycle is what makes replacement behaviours hold up.
Loneliness and disconnection
Washington is a city people move to for work and leave again. Feeling unmoored in a place full of people is more common here than most admit.
Postpartum depression
New parenthood can arrive with feelings nobody prepared you for. It is common, treatable, and not a verdict on you as a parent.
Individual therapy for relationship issues
You do not need your partner in the room to work on a relationship. Plenty of useful work happens one to one.
Premarital counseling
Structured preparation before marriage, including guided assessments, so you go in having had the difficult conversations rather than discovering them later.
Couples and family therapy in DC
Relationship work is the largest part of what we do in Washington. Our clinicians are trained in Imago, Relationship Enhancement and Emotionally Focused approaches, and Keith Miller’s IFIO training brings IFS directly into couples work.
Because it is a subject in its own right, it has a dedicated page: marriage and couples counseling in Washington DC. We also offer premarital counseling, counseling after an affair, and support for Black couples with clinicians who understand the specific pressures involved.
An affirming practice
Members of the LGBTQ+ community are welcome here, and we offer LGBTQ+ affirming counseling in DC. We work with questions of sexuality and gender identity as part of a life, not as the problem to be solved. We also work with people in consensually non-monogamous and polyamorous relationships.
Finding the Dupont Circle office
We are in the Sunderland Building, on the corner of 19th and Sunderland, with a restaurant at street level. One caution worth knowing: the building numbers around us are confusing, because odd and even numbers run along the same side of the street. It is easier to navigate by the restaurant on our ground floor than by the numbers.
By Metro, take the south escalator out of Dupont Circle station, bear right across 19th Street, and continue in the same direction you were walking. For parking, there are metered spaces along 19th and Sunderland, and several paid garages along 19th, one immediately north of the building.
To enter you will need the door code for Suite 200, which your counselor gives you before your first session. For appointments after 6pm on weekdays, or at weekends and on holidays, there is a second code for the building key in the lock-box by the entrance. You can also call your counselor from downstairs when you arrive.
Areas we serve
The Dupont Circle office serves clients from across the District, including Georgetown, Adams Morgan, Logan Circle, Foggy Bottom, Capitol Hill and Columbia Heights. We also see clients commuting from Northern Virginia, including Arlington, McLean and Alexandria, for whom Dupont is often an easier journey than a Maryland office. Our second office is in Bethesda, Maryland.

Fees and insurance
Fees at the DC office are $250 to $450 for a 50 minute session, depending on the clinician you see. Payment is taken by card before your first session.
We do not bill insurance directly. Our clinicians are licensed, so our services qualify for reimbursement under most plans, and clients who submit their own out-of-network claims commonly recover 40–60% of what they pay. We provide the statement you need. See our full policies and fees.
Frequently asked questions
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. You can meet your counselor in person at either our Washington DC or Bethesda office, online by video, or by phone. Many clients alternate between them.
Do you accept insurance?
We do not bill insurance directly, but many clients submit their own out-of-network claims and often receive 40–60% of the expense back. One practical note for couples: most insurers will not reimburse against “marriage counseling” as a description. The reimbursable procedure code is conjoint psychotherapy, code 90847.
How do I choose a therapist?
You do not have to. Call the referral coordinator on extension 0, describe what you are dealing with and when you can meet, and we will match you with the clinician best suited to it, not whoever happens to be free.
How quickly can I be seen?
We offer a free phone consultation before you commit to anything. Weekday appointments before 4pm have the widest choice of clinicians; evenings and weekends fill faster.
Where exactly is the DC office?
