Tifphane Walker-Riley is a Couple and Family Therapist, specializing in Sex Therapy, with over 10 years of experience providing individual, couple, group and family psychotherapy. As a social justice driven therapist, she has expertise in working with the LGBTQ community, communities of color, health issues, trauma survivors, and couples dealing with a variety of issues from infidelity to sexual dysfunction.
I have been trained in Systems Family Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Systemic Sex Therapy. A big influence in my life has been the feminist perspective. Being a family and couples therapist has also taught me to be equally sensitive to the unique needs of men and women. The work I have done with marginalized populations has helped me develop a deep level of respect for those who show resilience in the face of challenges.
Tifphane received her Bachelors in Psychology with a minor in African Studies from Temple University, a Masters in Couple and Family Therapy from Drexel University, a Masters of (Sexuality) Education from Widener University and is currently ABD in the completion of her PhD in Human Sexuality at Widener University. Tifphane is a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) The Association of Black Sexologists and Clinicians (ABSC), and The Black Doctoral Network (BDN). Tifphane has presented at conferences locally and nationally on topics such as low sexual desire in lesbian survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and gender role norms in relationships.
PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY AND INTRODUCTION
I am a native of Philadelphia now residing in Maryland with my wife and son. My interest in helping others understand themselves has been a lifelong passion of mine. Growing up queer and struggling with acceptance of my varied identities, I needed a listening ear and non-judgmental heart that was often difficult to find in in mental health professionals. Upon graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I worked as a Foster Care Social Worker for several years. My work as a social worker aided in my realization that my passion was therapy, as I could help children and families create better lives for themselves by first understanding each other and re-scripting their narratives and understanding of healthy relationships.
Working with me in therapy will be a journey, where I will walk with and support you in unpacking past and present hurts, and to heal and gain the necessary tools to cope with the barriers life presents.
Clients may receive the following type of support in their work with me:
My clinical focus:
Clients who come in for Sex Therapy will receive assistance exploring the ways in which their sexuality and sexual functioning may be impacted by other experiences in their lives. Our sex lives and the way we perceive ourselves as sexual beings is rooted in our experiences with our family of origin, religion, culture, self-perception of our identity, perception of our sexuality, health challenges, and prior experiences with intimacy. Clients will explore and process negative perceptions of self, work to overcome barriers to having pleasurable sex lives, and ways to re-script their narratives to create overall emotional and behavior change.
The first few sessions will be used to get to know you and to gather information on your background, with special emphasis on your sexual history and how you developed your beliefs about sex. I have experience working with clients who struggle with Low Sexual Desire, Erectile dysfunction, vaginal pain and difficulty reaching orgasm.
Sex therapy does not involve any direct sexual experiences in the therapist office.
I provide couples therapy that will give you the tools to handle conflict and negatively productively and make the kind of changes that allow you to experience more joy together. I help you communicate your needs or create healthy boundaries in your relationship in ways that make your partner more likely to support you. My training in human sexuality means I’m comfortable with any topic imaginable from enhancing sexual excitement, novelty and passion or making it safe to talk about more complex subjects like the spectrum of one’s sexual identity and interest/lack of interest in sex, or . in addition to her special training in sex therapist she can provide support to couples looking to explore non-monogamy as well as .
Non-Monogamous and Exploring Couples
Non-monogamous couples will explore what non-monogamy means to them and negotiate what that means for their relationships.
I can help clients in various stages of relationship exploration:
- New to exploring kink and/or poly relationships
- Experienced with the lifestyle but facing challenges
- Needing support to coming out to partners, friends, family, or children
Clients will unpack and explore the meaning of their gender identity, how it impacts their life and relationships, and how to cope with challenges and discrimination. We’ll develop strategies to overcome barriers such as lack of family support, racial identity struggles, or low self-esteem or confidence. I believe that when you nurture and develop the way in which you see yourself in the world, you can improve how the world sees you.
Healing from trauma requires patience, understanding and skill. Whether you’ve had sexual, physical or emotional trauma, I use a structure in therapy that will help you make sense of the sometimes chaotic remnants from trauma that may be affecting your relationships and success in life. You can feel confident and safe in the world and live a life less controlled by fear, with more joy and peace.

INSURANCE: Neither Keith Miller Counseling, LLC or Tifphane Walker-Riley accept insurance or participate in insurance networks. However, because we are licensed mental health providers, it is likely that your insurance may provide “out of network” coverage in the form of reimbursement for mental health services. Coverage and reimbursement rates varies widely across policies, so it will be your responsibility to find out what your expected reimbursement rate may be from your insurance company. You are responsible for paying in full for services rendered at the time of service, and upon request, I will provide you with a monthly invoice to submit to your insurance company if you plan to pursue reimbursement. As you are making your decision about pursuing insurance reimbursement, please consider the following:
CONFIDENTIALITY: All insurance companies require some level of information about the reason you are seeking mental health services in order to process your claim. In addition, managed care plans often require detailed information regarding the problem(s) for which you are seeking help, its history, symptoms, family and work life, and sometimes more. This information is then entered into a large information processing system and current regulations may not be strong enough to completely protect your confidentiality.
CONTROL OF TREATMENT: Managed care companies may use the information provided to them to decide if treatment is “medically necessary,” what kind of therapy is or is not approved, and later, if it should continue. Many insurance company employees who make these decisions have limited training, and oftentimes have never met or even talked to you.
PSYCHIATRIC DIAGNOSIS: Health insurance exists to pay for the treatment of a diagnosable illness. Therefore, to access insurance benefits for mental health services, a psychiatric diagnosis code must be given before most insurance companies will pay or reimburse for services. Oftentimes, insurance companies require a certain level of severity of diagnosis that they deem necessary for treatment and to some this may feel overly severe or pathologizing. I will use my best clinical judgment, in consultation with you, to determine your diagnosis. For couples, I will use the procedure code: 908.47 for “conjoint therapy” because insurance companies typically do not reimburse for “marriage” or “couples” therapy.
Scheduling an appointment with me involves the reservation of time that is set aside specifically for you, therefore a minimum of 36 hours is required for re-scheduling or canceling an appointment. Unless we have reached a different agreement together (based on schedules or some other extenuating circumstance), the full session fee will be charged for sessions in which you do not show up or do not cancel at least 36 hours in advance of your scheduled appointment time (see Fees and Payment section above for instructions regarding carrying a balance). Insurance companies do not generally reimburse for missed or canceled sessions.
In the case of inclement weather, the above cancellation policy is in effect unless the federal government is closed, or unless we agree upon something different.
