Couples Counseling
How Our Couples counseling Works
Our couples counseling expertise comes in a two-pronged approach. If appropriate we may talk to you about learning some structured skills to help with communication and intentionally connecting to your partner. Some of these approaches are from what is known as Imago Relationship Therapy. Briefly, Imago (rhymes with “cargo”) theory is that we are with the kind of partner that can help us finish growing up if we choose to learn from our conflict. And since learning from conflict isn’t always the first instinct we have, Imago is designed to help you repeat good habits until they become second-nature.
As helpful as learning healthy relationship skills may be, every relationship or every person may not be ready for this kind of approach; it tends to work well when there are fewer catastrophic stresses, like an affair, chronic depression, anxiety, or addiction. This is why you’ll also find that our couples counseling uses a variety of approaches to work with you, rather than making you fit into any one approach that we use.
Much of the most current research on long-term relationship health shows that there are many different healthy relationship styles. To us, this is so important that we make every effort to listen carefully to what you are telling us and what you think you need the most help with. And, because we specialize in helping a variety of emotional issues like anxiety, depression and addictions, we can offer guidance to make sure you are being your best self in your relationship.
Learn How to Stop Feeding the Problem – Become the Solution With the Help of Couples Counseling
Are you willing to make it possible for your partner to give you what you need in the relationship? When we are disconnected in our relationships sometimes we don’t think that we could possibly be part of the cause. Learning how to accept responsibility without taking all the blame is a critical step to start a positive cycle of connection. Our couples counseling can make sure you take unproductive blame out of your conversations and start making progress.

We are members of the National Registry of Marriage Friendly Therapists.
You will find some interesting articles on their website about the potential hazards of putting your relationship in the hands of a therapist who isn’t specifically trained or experienced with the complexity of relationship therapy (this also applies to doing individual psychotherapy when you are in a relationship). Because relationship therapy is the most “in-demand” form of psychotherapy, there is significant financial motivation for most therapists to tell you they work with couples. It is important to ask specific questions about your therapist’s training, volume of couples in the practice, philosophy, and even outcomes for couples counseling.
